Upsala School looks at projects

The Upsala School District has quite a few items coming up on their maintenance plan, and during their March 1 meeting they discussed options for a maintenance schedule.

Preston Euerle from RA Morton presented an updated facilities plan and budget for the Upsala School District.

The Upsala school has some facility projects coming up, including upgrades, renovations, and replacing the boiler system.

“Timing will be important,” said Euerle.

The board will take some time to review the proposed facilities plan and discuss options at their next meeting.

The school board also discussed the ongoing bus driver shortage.

“We are getting to the point where we will need to look hard at if we can sustain our own transportation,” said Superintendent Vern Capelle.

The board has looked at contracting with a bus company in the past.

“I think, for the community, it would be better to try to figure out what level of pay it’s going to take for people to want the job,” said Board Member Dean Peterson.

The school will talk to neighboring schools and ask how they handle bus driver shortages and transportation issues. The school will also be looking at purchasing a bus and van for the next school year.

The board approved the resignation of Head Custodian Don Ehrenberg. The school is putting plans together for his replacement.

“We have a lot of good students that are helping out,” said Capelle.

The school plans to replace the head custodian and hire a third custodian.

Due to the number of weather-related canceled school days, Upsala school added April 6 as a student and staff day.

“That should keep us above the minimum,” said Capelle.

The board approved the 2023-24 calendar and is looking into adding designated weather make-up days in future calendars.

The board approved a Boundary Waters field trip for May 13-15. The board also approved an art club trip to Scotland and Ireland on May 16-26, 2025.
